If you’re ~diene~ to get off campus (and off the mainland) then join chemistry professor Rebecca Broyer on an overnight trip to the Channel Islands, the “Galapagos of North America!” We will be visiting Anacapa, the smallest of the Channel Islands, and spend our time exploring the 1 square mile of volcanic rock, sea caves, and cliffs. Get ready for mind blowing sunset watching, card game playing, and seagull/pelican/sea lion sighting.

We’ll be taking a short drive into the Angeles National Forest to hike Mount Waterman (and possibly other nearby peaks) then camp at the nearby Buckhorn Ski Lodge in a trip filled with mindfulness, gratitude and performance of course, Not sure what performance science is? Truly one of California’s best kept secrets, the Carrizo Plain National Monument is home to glorious wildlife (BIRDS, antelope), wildflowers (ones that will be in bloom while we are there), and geologic and cultural history. Prominent features on the monument include the white alkali flats of Soda Lake, Painted Rock, vast open grasslands, and a broad plain rimmed by mountains.
Join yoga professor Stephanie Eggert for a truly once in a lifetime opportunity - an island meditation and yoga retreat! Professor Eggert is a kundalini yogi, a school of yoga that incorporates movement, dynamic breathing techniques, meditation, and the chanting of mantras. Beginners are welcome to join, no yoga or meditation experience necessary!

While it took 23 million years for the Pinnacles to travel 200 miles along the San Andreas fault from L.A. to Central California, we’ll be making a weekend out of the journey. We’ll do everything Pinnacles National Park has to offer, from exploring unique talus caves and tall rock spires to watching massive California Condors in one of their few natural habitats.
The Peaks and Professionals series returns! For this iteration of the series we have the honor of being joined by writer Shawnte Salabert on an overnight wildflower-chasing and slot canyon ‘splorin camping excursion to Anza-Borrego State Park.
Get excited for some backpacking right in our own backyard! We will be heading up North to Ojai to backpack the Sespe River Trail to the Willett Hot Springs, about 7.5 miles out and back each way. Despite the distance, we will not have much elevation gain, so this will be a wonderful backpacking trip for both those new to backpacking and those who have been backpacking for years. Professor Harris is very excited for the trip, and may even bring his dog, Benbow!
Come join Peaks and Professors for a two day/one night Halloweekend adventure in the Mojave desert where we’ll be visiting a ghost town (#spooky)! We’ll also be checking out a towering volcanic crater, climbing through some swiss cheese-looking rock formations, checkin’ out some petroglyphs, and catching the sunset from the top of some 700-foot sand dunes. Join us on a quick but mighty one night backpacking trip as we summit Southern California’s highest peak, Mt. San Gorgonio! Although relatively unknown to Southern Californians, Mt. San Gorgonio towers over the entire southland at an elevation of 11500 feet, with views of the San Gabriels, inland empire, San Jacinto, and Joshua Tree.

Established in 1911, this little town is home to a number of restaurants, bakeries, and merchants offering a taste of Denmark in California! After some daytime exploring, we’ll head on to Los Padres National Forest for a beautiful camping night! We’ll wake up early Sunday morning to hike Figueroa Mountain before heading back to campus! You should be in for a weekend of history, nature, and yummy treats!

Double the professors, double the fun! Not sure whether you like your math or spanish class better? Join math professor Jesse Levitt and spanish professor Marianna Chodorowska-Pilch for a fun filled overnight to Anacapa Island! As one of the smallest Channel Islands, we'll make sure there's plenty of adventure time, along with hanging out at the beach and watching the sunset off of the cliffs! We should be there at ~peak~ wildflower bloom, so don't forget your cameras! Camping will be primitive (we'll bring our own food, equipment, and water), so get ready for a wild adventure! *Price includes boat ticket, food/water, and campsites*

Join Peaks & Professors on our first overnight trip to the Channel Islands! We'll be heading to Santa Cruz Island about 20 miles offshore in the Santa Barbara Channel. Although close to the mainland, the island is a different world with beautiful views, endemic species, isolated beaches and night skies full of stars. We'll be taking many moderate dayhikes with the longest one about eight miles.

Join Peaks & Professors as we embark on an amazing trip to Mojave National Preserve and Kelso Dunes with biokinesiology whiz Jason Kutch. Commonly mixed up with the after-dinner treat (yikes, I know that was bad pls still come on a trip with me), deserts are one of California's hidden wonders and our weekend will be legendary. Join us as spend the night at Sunrise Rocks, hike Tetunia and watch the sun set from Kelso Dunes before we run full-speed down the sand mountains.
Peaks is proud to present our first OUT OF STATE trip through the red rocks and canyons of Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. Making the most of the long weekend, join us as we traverse some of the most iconic scenery of the American Southwest--Zion National Park, Buckskin Gulch, Valley of Fire ~it's lit~ State Park, and Black Canyon of the Colorado. Itinerary will be flexible based on weather conditions, but we'll be seeing some sick scenery. Additionally, the moon will be waning during this time, so get ready to see the darkest skies / most stars ever.
