Switzer Falls w/ Matthew Hill {Economics}

HIKING TO A BEAUTIFUL WATERFALL!!! Come with us to Switzer Falls, a 3.6-mile hike with 600ft of elevation gain to slow-max with the coolest professor at SC! We’ll start the day at 9 AM, aim to get to the trail at 10, eat lunch (provided by Peaks) on the trail around 11:30, hike back, and return to campus around 2:00 PM. This is a moderate trail, so come if you’re experienced! We’ll have a lot of time to relax by the rushing water and learn from Professor Hill, so it should be a very chill hike!

PACKING LIST:

  • LOTS OF H2O!! 3 LITERS MINIMUM

  • MOVABLE CLOTHING

  • ATHLETIC SHOES (nothing open-toed)

  • SUNSCREEN

  • SNACKS

  • SUNGLASSES/HAT (recommended)

  • BACKPACK (recommended)

  • MEDICATION/EPIPEN (if necessary)

  • WAIVERS

Matthew J. Hill received his PhD in 2012 from UCLA. Since then, he has worked at a think tank, advised startups, taught economics and conducted research. His work has been published in several prestigious journals including Health Economics, Labour Economics and the Journal of Economic History. Broadly, his research interests include Economic History, Urban Economics and the Economics of Education. Before joining USC, he was on the faculty at Loyola Marymount. He also has a cool YouTube channel that you should ask him about!

FACT: Switzer Falls, a stunning 50-foot waterfall in the Angeles National Forest, was once the site of a popular 19th-century luxury resort called "Switzer-land". Founded in 1884, the camp featured a 15-mile hiking trail, a chapel, and was famously visited by celebrities like Shirley Temple and Clark Gable in its heyday.
