This trip is part of the 2022 City Nature Challenge! Celebrate the end of classes for the semester with a relaxing and beautiful hike in Malibu Creek State Park. This 3-4 mile hike is pretty flat and relatively easy, with the highlight being the big picturesque rock pool shaded by sycamores and bays, with views of the Santa Monica mountains all around. We will be using iNaturalist to observe, document, and identify species along the way!

Professor Sohm is a biological oceanographer and microbial ecologist, who LOVES nitrogen fixation. She is mainly focused in nutrient limitation of carbon and nitrogen fixation, the competition for limiting nutrients, and how these factors shape the ecology of phytoplankton species/communities. She teaches a Problems Without Passports class on Catalina Island, where students study water and soil sustainably. Ask her about the 10+ oceanographic cruises she’s conducted research on, or how she deals with being the coolest person ever.
