Is midterm season burning you out? Take a break with Peaks and join us for a relaxing 9.9 mile hike at Mount Lukens with Professor Matt Dean! With river crossings, switchbacks, and radio towers, Mount Lukens is the highest point of elevation in Los Angeles and has majestic views of the city and nearby mountain ranges. Come for the interesting discussions with Prof. Dean and other students and leave with strong calf muscles and a love for the California outdoors!

PROFESSOR: Matt Dean
DEPARTMENT: Biology
Matt Dean is a biologist who studies evolutionary biology, quantitative genetics, sexual selection, and “awesomeness” (as quoted in his USC faculty page) . An interesting research project that he led looked at hundreds of whale pelvic bones in the Natural History Museum to identify the evolutionary purpose of these previously believed “useless” muscles and their role in sexual selection. In his Mammology class, he has also trapped and tagged squirrels on campus to track them down to the exact tree on campus.
