David Hutchins has been a Professor of Marine and Environmental Biology at USC for 19 years. His laboratory uses experiments to understand marine microbiology, including how global change affects ocean food webs. He works in marine environments ranging from the tropics to Antarctica to understand the ecological impacts of ocean climate change. Some of his areas of interest include phytoplankton biology, evolution of marine micro-organisms, and harmful algal blooms. Recent work has also looked at plans for capturing carbon dioxide in the ocean, and how this may affect marine biological communities. In his spare time, Prof. Hutchins enjoys traveling, hiking and fly fishing.
