Mishe Mokwa trail to Sandstone Peak— come out for some beautiful views of the Santa Monica Mountains, a steady climb up to Sandstone peak (the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains!!!), and some great conversation with the coolest and kindest professor EVER, Dr. Jill Sohm. This trail is roughly 6 miles and about 1,500 feet of elevation gain. One of the best hikes in LA, in my of course unbiased opinion.

Professor Sohm is a biological oceanographer and microbial ecologist, who LOVES nitrogen fixation. She is mainly focused in nutrient limitation of carbon and nitrogen fixation, the competition for limiting nutrients, and how these factors shape the ecology of phytoplankton species/communities. She teaches a Problems Without Passports class on Catalina Island, where students study water and soil sustainably. Ask her about the 10+ oceanographic cruises she’s conducted research on, or how she deals with being the coolest person ever.
