If you’re ~diene~ to get off campus (and off the mainland) then join chemistry professor Rebecca Broyer on an overnight trip to the Channel Islands, the “Galapagos of North America!” We will be visiting Anacapa, the smallest of the Channel Islands, and spend our time exploring the 1 square mile of volcanic rock, sea caves, and cliffs. Get ready for mind blowing sunset watching, card game playing, and seagull/pelican/sea lion sighting.

Truly one of California’s best kept secrets, the Carrizo Plain National Monument is home to glorious wildlife (BIRDS, antelope), wildflowers (ones that will be in bloom while we are there), and geologic and cultural history. Prominent features on the monument include the white alkali flats of Soda Lake, Painted Rock, vast open grasslands, and a broad plain rimmed by mountains.

Join craft beer connoisseur and Spatial Sciences professor Darren Ruddell on a hike through the lush valley of Malibu Creek State Park! During the recent Woolsey fires, select parts of the park were burned rather substantially, and as such it’s the perfect location for seeing the impacts of fire in Southern California first hand. We’ll be taking a beautiful 6.5 mile hike through areas both touched and untouched by these fires, complete with open fields and shaded rock pools. Darren is a leading expert on urban sustainability and climate, so come join us for a day full of stellar views and interesting conversations!

Come join us on a hike to one of the most popular waterfalls in Angeles National Forest! And as one of LA's few dog friendly hikes, you may seem some particularly good views along the way. The hike meanders back and across the stream running down the spectacular Arroyo Seco Canyon. The stream is lined with trees, with the water cascading over granite into mirror-like pools. We may also make a burrito stop because it is Professor Bunn's favorite food!

Only 40 minutes outside of the USC bubble, we will be heading to Cave of Munits. Unwind before the week begins with this short, easy hike with only a wee bit more effort required once we actually reach the caves. It is not every day that you can go on a 2.1-mile loop with as much excitement as the hike to the Cave of Munits and Castle Peak. And you get to do it with an awesome professor. Added bonus because Ben Graham, his wife, and three adorable children will be joining us for this hike and chances are you have already seen them scrambling around campus and or eating in a dining hall.

We'll be exploring this beautiful trail nestled in Malibu on a 3.7 mile path with minimal elevation gains all while layin' down some cultural knowledge with a truly authentic Spaniard!

Come meet wildlife biologist Miguel Ordeñana in one of his workspaces, Griffith Park! We will start the day off with his personal account on the infamous LA mountain lion, P-22. We will carry on with an easy hike to one of the camera traps used in capturing mammal movement around Griffith Park. We will trek up Skyline Trail and loop back around down Oak Canyon Trail after checking out the cameras. Don't miss this opportunity if you are interested in meeting a professional in wildlife conservation or in learning about the history of Los Angeles. Fun and informative times will be had by all.
